Chairman’s Welcome Address

It’s hard to believe that what was only a glimmer of an idea a few short years ago has evolved into the best APS ‘World Series of Philately’ Stamp Show in the entire Southwestern United States! It takes efforts of many to achieve and maintain this level of distinction. Some are very visible, yet other key supporters are more in the background. In order from ‘National’ to ‘Local’, we recognize the American Philatelic Society and the American Stamp Dealers Association. Absent trade and organized philately support we would not have been able to get off to a running start. Stanley Piller, then ASDA President was one of the first to take a booth ‘sight unseen’ as a show of dealer confidence. The APS including its judging/exhibiting arm [CANEJ] provided encouragement and support in navigating the regulatory environment. Both organizations provided outreach to their respective memberships in promoting our event. Our champions at the US Postal Service also support our mission.

Our main convening Societies, The Collectors Club, India Study Circle, and United States Philatelic Classics Society are hosting a multitude of activities to enrich our philatelic experience. San Diego’s own Poway Stamp Club [100+ active members] is recognized as one of the premier local clubs in the entire country! Kudos to it’s leadership team: Art Berg, Dave Klauber, Trice Klauber, and Bill Kolb for having the vision and means to provide ongoing support in many areas. Aside from sponsoring our multiframe Grand Award, the PSC provides a welcoming presence at the show entrance and throughout the venue. Ongoing outreach and supporting of PSC members to attend this event along with their encouragement of seminars and learning help us in our educational mission. Convening societies have provided many informative exhibits and form the backbone of our seminar and ‘at the frame’ exhibit sessions. Please thank the dealers who continue to support us with their presence. One key function is to serve as a living laboratory to assist events such as ours in maintaining relevance and viability going forward. As part of that goal, there were some suggestions offered by various parties that we add focus and enrichment for the casual collector and beginning exhibitor. As a direct result, we are honored to host an APS ‘Town Hall’ with Scott English, Executive Director. A ‘beginning exhibitor’ seminar newly created by CANEJ Chair Darrell Ertzberger will focus on mentoring less experienced exhibitors. Focused exhibit walkthroughs with experts in the areas are intended to deepen appreciation for the material and exhibiting in general. Several regional and local societies will conduct hybrid meetings to broaden outreach both in the room, and beyond.
